This is a wonderful time of year to be out walking in the Ardnamurchan countryside as there are so many plants, animals and insects appearing again after our long, wet winter. The first woozy bees, both honey bees and big, yellow bumblebees have been seen buzzing around the area and the first wildflowers have started to appear tucked under hedges and away from the breeze. From now, right the way through the summer, the area showcases an abundance of colour with wild flowers resplendently in bloom. Violets, primroses and speedwells are already out with bluebells, cowslips and milkwort following in April. Then in May the place becomes a vision of yellow with flag irises appearing everywhere and a huge variety of rare orchids popping up in the more remote areas.
Wildlife is also waking up and otters and their cubs can be seen regularly around the coasts and the first basking sharks begin to arrive in the area in May. This is one of the nicest times to visit and stay for awhile, so check out a great selection of self-catering cottages at www.steadingholidaycottages.co.uk! Golden Eagles and Sea Eagles are often overhead at this time of year, rather ominously checking to see whether there are any new lambs in the fields with their mothers.
